Getting Started

One of the best parts of e-prescribing is that it can be very quick and easy to set up and use. Pharmacies have already done most of the work to make themselves compatible with e-prescribing solutions. In fact, approximately 70 percent of the pharmacies in the U.S. are able to process prescriptions written using e-prescribing software already! Setup methods vary between solution providers, but the concepts and requirements for each company are generally similar.

Very little is actually required of the practice to begin e-prescribing. All that most providers require is that you have internet-enabled computers with a high speed connection (not dial-up), and a database of patients.

An important thing to keep in mind is that you cannot entirely eliminate paper prescriptions from your practice. The Drug Enforcement Administration prohibits sending prescriptions for controllable substances electronically. Thus, any Schedule 2 narcotics must be prescribed on paper.

Ehealthinitiative has released an excellent guide for physicians just beginning to consider making the switch to e-prescribing, as well as for those who have already switched.
