There are many stand-alone e-prescribing solutions offered currently in the United States, and choosing the one that is best for your practice might seem a daunting task. There is no "be-all-end-all" method to choosing a solution, but there are certain guidelines that have been put in place to help you make your decision.

Surescripts is a good place to begin looking for these guidelines, as Surescripts is a popular medium between your e-prescribing solution provider and the pharmacies to which you will be prescribing. They observe each of the products using their interface closely, and from their data, the products are rated based on the adequacy of their performance. Surescripts tests every product's implementation of the following features:

• Prescription benefit eligibility/formulary
• Prescription benefit reporting
• Prescription history
• New retail prescription routing
• New mail-order prescription routing
• Retail prescription renewal
• Mail-order prescription renewal

Each of these features is rated individually by Surescripts, with the worst possible rating being "Uncertified," and the best being "Platinum Solution Provider." At this time, the only standalone e-prescribing solution with a platinum ranking is provided by RxNT.
