Eprescribing Basics and the Benefits to You and Your Patients:

ePrescribing is the process of generating and transmitting a prescription or renewal request electronically.

Using the diagram below, a practitioner (A) logging securely into an eRx application will select a patient pre-populated from the practitioner’s billing system; the eRx application (B) will automatically run a real—time patient eligibility check and will retrieve patient specific formulary information and claims medication history from participating health plans (C) during the prescribing process. The eRx application will provide patient specific formulary information in easy to understand color and symbol formats. If a practitioner selects a non-formulary medication or a medication that will may cause a drug or allergy interaction, the eRx application will provide warnings and alternatives when available based on practitioner preferences. Retail and mail order pharmacies (D) will receive electronic prescriptions (or faxes if they are not capable of receiving electronic prescriptions) from the eRx application. Pharmacies capable of generating electronic renewals will transmit renewal requests to participating eRx application practitioners.

An e-prescribing system will certainly be beneficial to your practice, should you choose to invest in one. However, the best part is that your patients, as well as your practice, will benefit from your decision.
